Where We've Been

Chevy Chase Country Club, Los Angeles, Calif.
The Chevy Chase Country Club's clubhouse is a two-story wood frame and stucco building, originally built in the early 1930s. It features a full restaurant, bar and banquet facilities, plus a dance floor and golf shop.
The clubhouse kitchen was recently destroyed by a fire, which also caused some damage to the second-floor locker room and a portion of the dining area.
Major repairs had to be made to the kitchen, and they included a substantial amount of code upgrades. When the building was built in the '30s, code requirements for handicap accessibility didn't exist. Also, the health department¹s current requirements for the kitchen and its preparation area are very different.
YOUNG & Associates activities included:
Overseeing emergency-service repairs and restoration of the pro shop so the country club could continue some business operations;
Scoping the fire damage repairs including code upgrades;
Scoping and cost review with the general contractor;
Providing assistance in value engineering and floor-plan changes;
Reviewing code upgrades.
A special note. . . the need to upgrade because of code requirements added some unique aspects to this job, including how to solve the code-upgrade issues in a cost-effective manner for the insured. For example, the kitchen's square footage had to be expanded to meet current health-department requirements for equipment, storage and accessibility, thus creating problems in the adjoining bar and dining rooms. YA helped address and resolve these issues through several meetings with Los Angeles building officials and health-department officials. The efforts also included negotiations with the insured, the insured's engineer, the kitchen-equipment contractor and the general contractor.
